What is a Dishcrawl?
A Dishcrawl is a food crawl. A Dishcrawl is generally a sampling of three chef specialties at each of four restaurants, all within walking distance of each other, in a particular neighborhood. Typically, the first three restaurants do something savory and the last one does dessert. You buy a ticket ($45 for four restaurants) for each Dishcrawl event, which covers food and gratuity. It doesn’t cover drinks. We walk from one restaurant to another as a group. It’s a great time. There are Dishcrawls in 100 cities in the U.S.

When did Dishcrawl come to Baltimore?
Dishcrawl came to Baltimore on April 17.

Tell us about your first Charm City crawl.
Our first Dishcrawl was in Canton. It was phenomenal. Canton is a fantastic food neighborhood. We went to four restaurants: We began at Of Love and Regret, where we had braised lamb-stuffed rigatoni topped with fresh tomato sauce and the house-made ricotta cheese (and two other dishes); then we made our way to Jack’s Bistro, where one of our dishes was Guinness-braised filet mignon with grits, and a tomato and fried-feta crouton. Next, we were off to Jasa Kabob, where one of our dishes was chicken tikka masala barbecued in a charcoal clay oven. We concluded the night at Dangerously Delicious Pies. Rodney Henry, co-owner of Dangerously Delicious Pies, came out and served us lemon chess, Baltimore bomb, and a mixed berry pie himself.

How is a Dishcrawl different from a typical food tour?  
Well, Dishcrawls only go to locally owned restaurants, and on Dishcrawls the chef or owners come out and talk with the Dishcrawlers about the restaurant—explain to them what they are eating, maybe share the inspiration for the dish, where the food came from, etc…It’s a very personal experience. It’s like being a food VIP for the night.
A Dishcrawl is also a way to try four restaurants in one night, meet different people, and bond together over food. And, really, what’s nicer than that?

When is the next Dishcrawl?
We do one Dishcrawl a month. May 14 was our second Dishcrawl in Canton—“The Canton Crawl: the Road Less Traveled.” It began at Verde on Montford Ave. I think my next neighborhood is Harbor East. I try to keep the restaurants a surprise until the day before the Dishcrawl. It’s more fun that way.
