Those accustomed to getting their franks at the ball park can meet the new dog in town: Stuggy’s, at 809 S. Broadway in Fells Point.
The menu, which can be found at the restaurant’s website, www.stuggys.com, is straightforward. Its sections include Dogs & Sausages (including kosher dogs, all-beef dogs, bison sausage, Italian sausage and Baernwurst), Specialty Dogs & Sausages (offerings here include the BMore Dog, Carolina Slaw Dog, Wild Thing and more), Sides (chili, fries alone or with chili, cheese or both), bison jerky, cornbread, cole slaw, fried pickles and more) and Combo Meals.
This is a carry-out with no indoor dining space, but on a nice day, eating on the square sounds like a great option. That and the ball game on the radio can give you the great Baltimore experience.
Caveat: The restaurant wants its patrons to know they use fresh ingredients, so the names of distributors are listed on the website. All the same, this is not a place for the faint of heart, meaning those watching their salt intake, on a diet, those who stick to bland food because they fear heartburn, or anyone who is concerned about organic this or health food that. For those individuals, other eateries are available. These are hot dogs. Enjoy them, would ya?
We sampled the Chi-Town Dog (all-beef quarter-pound jumbo hot dog, corn relish, diced raw onions, tomato, grilled peppers, celery salt, pickle spear and yellow mustard), Manhattan Dog (all beef quarter-pound jumbo kosher hot dog, sauerkraut and Stuggy’s Sauce), Cuban (all-beef quarter-pound jumbo kosher hot dog, pickle spear, pulled pork, baked Virginia ham, Swiss cheese and Mojo, and yes, they said Mojo, not mayo) and Bean Town (hot Italian sausage, grilled peppers, grilled onions and horseradish mustard).
One side, perfectly adequate as a main course, is the Doggie Bowl, which contains equal parts corn bread, chili, sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese and an all-beef hot dog.
Desserts (which nobody was able to consider after a big lunch) include Jeppi candy, fried Oreos or a pair of Berger cookies.
The place is open seven days a week (hours vary by day; check the website) and the website notes options for carry-out and delivery. The phone number is 410-327-0228.

One Comment on "Dining out: Hot dog! It’s a wienerful world"
For those on a diet, the hot dogs with vegetable toppings are not high in calories. And the bison sausage is lean (bison has significantly less fat than beef).
